The price of a hearing aid can feel like a bigger step than deciding to get help. For many people, cost is the first hesitation, well before the first appointment. That is understandable.

The reassuring part is that hearing aids in Malaysia may be partly offset through income tax relief. In some cases, insurance or employer benefits can help too, although eligibility varies. In this guide, we break down the main tax relief and how insurance coverage typically works. We also cover government subsidies and how to check what applies to you.

The Basic Supporting Equipment Tax Relief

LHDN, the Inland Revenue Board of Malaysia, offers hearing aid tax relief of up to RM6,000 a year under basic supporting equipment. This relief covers equipment bought for a disabled individual, and hearing aids sit alongside items such as wheelchairs and artificial limbs.

You can claim this OKU tax relief for yourself, your spouse, your child, or your parent. However, the wearer must be registered as an OKU (person with disabilities) with the Department of Social Welfare (JKM).

What Kind of Medical Expenses Are Tax-Deductible in Malaysia?

Medical expense relief is a separate LHDN category. It covers items such as serious illness care, vaccinations, dental examinations, and medical check-ups, up to RM10,000 in total. Hearing aids belong under the equipment category above, and each receipt should be claimed under one category only.

Figures reflect Year of Assessment 2025 at the time of writing. Please check LHDN’s latest guidance before you file.

What You Need to Claim It

Claiming the relief means keeping your paperwork in order. An audiologist’s report from a hearing assessment is often part of the supporting documents required. Keep these items ready.

  • OKU card: A valid card for the person the hearing aid is for.
  • Supporting documents: A report or letter from an audiologist or ENT specialist.
  • Original receipts: Proof of purchase showing the hearing aid details.
  • Tax return entry: The claim filed under the basic supporting equipment category in your annual return.

Keep these documents for seven years, as LHDN may ask for them later.

How to Register for an OKU Card

The OKU card is the gate to this relief. JKM asks for medical confirmation of your hearing loss before it issues the card. Here is what the application involves:

  • Audiologist’s assessment: A hearing assessment report confirming the severity of your hearing loss.
  • Signed application form: The JKM OKU form, signed by an audiologist and an ENT specialist.
  • District JKM office: Where you submit the completed form and wait for approval.

Requirements can change, so please confirm the latest steps with your district JKM office.

What About Insurance?

Insurance for hearing aids is limited under most standard private health policies and medical cards in Malaysia. Insurers often treat hearing aids as an elective device, much like glasses, so they are often excluded from standard coverage.

However, some employer group medical benefits or specific insurance riders may offer partial coverage. Check directly with your employer’s HR department or your insurer instead of assuming. It also helps to know current hearing aid prices in Malaysia before you ask. 0% Instalment plans up to 24 months with selected banks are another way to spread the cost alongside these options.

Coverage varies by insurer and policy, so confirm the details in writing before you decide.

What Is the Government Subsidy for Hearing Aids in Malaysia?

JKM offers a supportive devices aid for eligible individuals from lower-income groups. Hearing aids are among the devices it covers for OKU with hearing loss. Separate schemes may also exist for civil servants, government pensioners, military veterans, and patients receiving care at government hospitals. Our guide to government hearing aid subsidies explains each option in more detail.

Programmes and eligibility criteria change over time, so please confirm the latest details with the relevant agency.
